  • Peugeot wins its tenth Tour de France

    In 1977, Peugeot wins its tenth and final Tour de France with Bernard Thévenet. This record number of victories, still unbeaten to this day, confirms Peugeot’s place in the cycling hall of fame. Peugeot started contributing to this legend long before, in 1886, when Armand Peugeot urged the company to push forward with the mass production of the “Grand Bi”, a penny-farthing, and chain-driven bicycles. In 1904, Peugeot wins its first Tour de France with Louis Trousselier and goes down in legend of one of the greatest sporting challenges in the world.

    Launched in September 2011 by Peugeot Bikes, the LEGEND range revives and modernises the legendary models that won the Tour de France.

    Peugeot bikes only look back to the past of cycling to gain a better view of the future. Peugeot Bikes continues its quest to innovate and allure with the creation of new modern and urban bikes, especially the new ALLURE and RS ranges.
    Today, the bike is at the core of Peugeot’s commitment to the environment with the release of the electric-assisted bicycle, the E-bike, which also expresses Peugeot’s new style. With the DESIGN LAB range, and the innovative limited-production-run DL121, Peugeot Bikes is the proof that you can take inspiration from the history of cycling while still embodying the future.

  • The beginning of 200 years of Peugeot innovation

    1734 marks the starting point of the Peugeot family’s foray into industry with the birth of Jean-Pierre Peugeot. Jean-Pierre set up a weaving business, and left his heirs a dye-works, an oil mill and a grain mill.
    In 1810, Jean-Pierre’s two sons, Jean-Pierre II and Jean-Frédéric, found Peugeot Frères. The grain mill, owned by Jean-Frédéric, is converted into a steel foundry.

    In addition to the famous coffee grinder, created in 1840, the Peugeot family innovates and branches out into other industrial activities, producing band saws, springs and umbrella frames.
    More than 200 years on, the Peugeot name remains synonymous with innovation and diversity. Proof of innovation can be found in the field of electric cars and hybrid engines with the release of the Peugeot iOn in 2010 and the 3008 HYbrid4 in 2012, while diversity springs from activities that take Peugeot beyond the automotive industry, such as Peugeot Scooters, Peugeot Bikes and the Peugeot pepper mill, all benchmarks of high-quality, French innovation the world over.

  • Launch of the first Peugeot S55 scooter

    Ever since the launch in 1882 of the first Peugeot cycle, the penny-farthing “Grand Bi” with two unequal wheels, Peugeot has given birth to many remarkable two-wheeled models: the tandem, three-wheeler, racing bikes, motorbikes, mopeds and scooters.

    Peugeot Scooters, a major player in European urban mobility for 113 years, has the honour of being the oldest manufacturer of motorised two-wheeled vehicles in the world.
    The adventure in two-wheeled locomotion begins in the Beaulieu factory in Franche Comté, which from 1898 produced several successful motorbikes. In 1953, the company released the first Peugeot scooter, the S55 . Also present in the moped market, Peugeot made a record in 1974 by selling 550,000 mopeds, including the emblematic Peugeot 103 which in 2011 celebrates its 40th anniversary. Peugeot has made its mark on the universe of motorised two-wheeled vehicles, and continues to look for innovative ways to improve its range, like in 1982 with the launch of the 80cc SC/SX, the first scooter with plastic bodywork, in 1995 with the Scoot’Elec, the pioneer electric scooter, in 2002 with the Elystar, the first scooter equipped with ABS brakes, and in 2006 with the automobile-inspired GT 125 to 500cc scooters Satelis and Géopolis.

    In 2010, Peugeot Motorcycles become Peugeot Scooters and started selling its products in China. In 2011, Peugeot is once again revolutionising urban mobility with the launch of the e-Vivacity, a new-generation, fully electric scooter, and the world-first unveiling of its soon-to-be-released three-wheeled scooter, the Metropolis Project 400i, at the 69th International Motorcycle Show in Milan. These two additions will complement an already rich variety of 20 different models ranging from 50 to 500cc.
    Today, Peugeot’s scooter range forms an integral part of the Mu by Peugeot hire service, available during the week and at the weekend.

  • the Peugeot 201 and the age of the mass-produced motor vehicle

    In 1929, Peugeot unveils a 6 CV baptised the 201, the first car to use the new numbering system of three digits with a zero in the middle which is today used for all Peugeot vehicles. Mass produced on the Sochaux-Montbéliard site, the 201 marks Peugeot’s passage from small-scale business to mass production. The huge success of the 201 acted as the catalyst for the creation of the first range of new Peugeot cars, with the 301 launched in 1932, and the 401 and the 601 in 1934. Before the Second World War, the 401, the 301 and the 201 would be replaced respectively by the 402 in 1935, the 302 in 1936 and the 202 in 1938.

    The three foundations of Peugeot today – the numbering system with a zero in the middle, the development of a comprehensive range of vehicles, and the fast succession of new models to satisfy buyers’ high expectations – were all inherited from the 1930s.

    In 2011, the range of new Peugeot vehicles is made up of descendants of the 201 in the form of the Peugeot 206+ and the Peugeot 207, which will be superseded in Spring 2012 by the Peugeot 208. The Peugeot 208 will complete the generation of 8s alongside the 308, the 308 SW, the 308 CC, the 508, and the 508 SW.
    With the launch of the 1007, Peugeot decided to double the middle zero to easily identify new models like the Peugeot 4007 SUV , the Peugeot 3008 Crossover and the Peugeot 5008 Monospace. Whether with one middle zero or two, the Peugeot range will continue to innovate in 2012 with the launch of two hybrid vehicles: the 508 RXH and the 3008 HYbrid4.

    Armand Peugeot, a French vision for the motor vehicle

    In 1889, the visionary Armand Peugeot leads the company to unveil the first motor vehicle with the Peugeot name: the Serpollet-Peugeot, a steam-powered three-wheeler produced in collaboration with Léon Serpollet. In 1890, Armand Peugeot abandons steam in favour of petrol and produces Peugeot’s first four-wheeled, petrol-driven vehicle: the Type 2, with a Daimler engine.

    From steam to petrol, from handlebars to steering wheel, from wheels to tyres, the strategic industrial partnerships Armand Peugeot developed with Serpollet, Daimler and Michelin ensured he did not fall behind any of the technological innovations of his time.

    Forming key industrial partnerships is a Peugeot strategy that has continued over the centuries to make Peugeot one of the major players in the world automotive industry in the last ten years. Partnerships with Ford and BMW have allowed Peugeot to develop engines that are both powerful and low in CO2 emissions, and therefore more environmentally friendly, such as the HDi FAP Diesel engine and the THP and VTI petrol engines. Today, Peugeot is pursuing its conquest of new automotive markets throughout the world by signing partnerships with Chinese manufacturers Dongfeng and Changan. In doing so, Peugeot remains faithful to Armand Peugeot’s spirit of conquest and collaboration.

    From the 404 Cabriolet to the RCZ: the elegance of the Peugeot style

    Peugeot was the first manufacturer to put a mass-produced coupé-cabriolet on the market. In 1934, the Peugeot Eclipse 401 and 601 are sold with a retractable metal roof, the fruit of the stylist Georges Paulin’s imagination. The tradition of the Peugeot coupé-cabriolet continued after the war with the 203 cabriolet launched at the Paris motor show in 1951, and the 404 coupés and cabriolets marketed in 1962. Dreamed up by the automobile designer Pininfarina, the 404 Cabriolet is considered one of the most beautiful French cars of the 60s, and still remains a collectors’ favourite today.

    In 2011, Peugeot coupés continue to be a success, with the range including the 207 CC, the 308 CC, and the 407 Coupé, without forgetting the Peugeot RCZ, launched in Spring 2010. Since its release, more than 30,000 RCZ sports coupés have been sold across Europe. It is sold in more than 80 countries across the world.

  • The Peugeot 205: a magic number

    In 1983, Peugeot launches the 205, then, in 1984, the mythical 205 GTI. The 205 Turbo 16 won Peugeot two World Rally Championship titles in 1985 and 1986. Over 5 million Peugeot 205s were built before being superseded in 1998 by the Peugeot 206, which would break this record with over 6.5 million models built.

    The commercial success of the 205 and the 206 allowed Peugeot to develop an international strategy for its industrial activities. In 1998, Peugeot signed an agreement with the state of Rio de Janeiro to build a factory in Porto Real, which would produce its first 206s in December 2010. The Peugeot 207, launched in 2006, would go on to become the most sold car in Europe in 2007.

    Peugeot’s 2-Series success story is set to continue in 2012 with the launch of the new Peugeot 208. The 208, while staying true to the tradition of its glorious generation (205, 206, 207), marks the renewal of the Peugeot small car. The new 208 symbolises Peugeot’s regeneration: a new face with ‘floating’ grill, an optimised driver’s compartment and the addition of a modern touch screen, limited CO2 emissions (87 g/km of CO2 emissions for a Diesel engine and 99 g/km for a petrol engine). The 208 has everything it needs to become, like its illustrious older siblings, a magic number.

  • Peugeot joins the fight to safeguard the environment

    In 1999, the Peugeot 607 is sold with an HDi engine equipped with a particle filter (FAP). A world first, the FAP is an automatic particle elimination device which removes 99.9% of soot particles emitted by diesel engines. The FAP has since been progressively rolled out to a large number of Peugeot HDi engines. It complements the benefits of HDi technology in order to better protect the environment.

    The same year, Peugeot launched its “Carbon Sink” operation in Brazil in collaboration with the ONF (French National Forestry Service) and a Franco-Brazilian NGO. The goal of this operation is to fight against the greenhouse effect. Ten years on, the project is a major success with 2 million trees replanted and  111,000 net tonnes of CO2 sequestered.

    Today, Peugeot continues to innovate in order to curb CO2 emissions. In 2011, Peugeot launched its e-HDi micro-hybrid technology ** equipped with a new-generation Stop&Start* system. Initially featured in the Peugeot 508, other models soon benefited from this new technology: the 308 and the Partner Tepee, as well as the 3008 and the 5008. By 2012, 30% of Peugeot HDi models will feature e-HDi micro-hybrid technology. Peugeot has set itself the ambitious goal of reaching one million e-HDi vehicles in circulation by 2013.

    ** e-HDi technology makes it possible to cut fuel consumption by 15% compared with conventional vehicles, and ensures the vehicle restarts 40% faster compared with a reinforced starter system.

    Historic double for Peugeot in the “24 Heures du Mans” race

    In 2009, Peugeot Sport established its name with an historic double in the Le Mans 24-hour race with the 908 HDi FAP. This triumph was a fine way to compensate Peugeot’s passion for motor sports: rallies, rally raids, circuit racing and endurance racing.

    In 1985 and 1986, Peugeot was named World Rally Champion with the 205 Turbo 16. Peugeot took the title at the Paris-Dakar in 1987 and 1988 with the 205 T16, then again in 1989 and 1990 with the 405 T16.
    In November 2011, Peugeot chalked up another victory in the 908 HDi FAP at the ILMC Endurance Championship in Zhuhai, China, with a magnificent double. Peugeot continues to write the finest pages of motorsport history, and gives its customers the chance to take advantage of the innovations used in its racing cars by incorporating them into its range of vehicles.


    Peugeot is also present in the world of football, golf, tennis and rugby. Founder in 1928 and sole shareholder of FC Sochaux-Montbéliard, Peugeot won two French championship titles in 1935 and 1938, and triumphed at the Coupe de France in 1937, and more recently in 2007.

    Sponsor of the Peugeot French Open for 14 years, and official partner of the Lancôme Trophy up until 2003, Peugeot has always had a commitment to golf and, in 2010 launched the Peugeot RCZ Cup.
    In 1989, Peugeot became the official partner and transport provider of the French Tennis Open and launched the Roland-Garros special series, starting with the 205 hatchback and continuing to the current 207 CC and 308 CC.
    In November 2011, after 15 years of sponsoring the Stade Toulousain rugby team, Peugeot is releasing the limited edition 207 Stade Toulousain.

    200 years of Peugeot

    In 2010, to mark the bicentenary of the Peugeot brand, the emblematic Peugeot lion is changing again. Peugeot’s designers have created a simpler and more dynamic logo with a new stance and a new sense of movement. The new lion corresponds perfectly with Peugeot’s new signature “Motion & Emotion”. For its 200th anniversary, Peugeot is projecting itself into the future: at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, the brand will present the fully electric EX1 concept car, which is set to break several world records for acceleration from standstill.

    For its 200 years, Peugeot is also launching its top-of-the-range RCZ coupé, and innovating with the release of its fully electric city car, the Peugeot iOn. Furthermore, Peugeot is strengthening its international presence with the launch of the 408 in China and Latin America, and the Hoggar in Brazil.

    Not only is Peugeot is broadening its range of vehicles, the brand is also extending its range of services. Launched in 2010, Mu By Peugeot provides cars, scooters, bikes and accessories for hire, throughout the week and at the weekend, in Europe’s major cities.

    With 200 years of history and innovation under its belt, Peugeot is bringing the automobile into the future by taking up new challenges posed by the environment and mobility. Following the launch of the top-of-the-range 508 saloon in 2011, Peugeot is preparing to meet new challenges in 2012 with the release of the 208, the 3008 HYbrid4, the 508 RXH and the 4008.
